  • first worm was "creeper" in 1971 that jumped to computers via networks
    • mostly harmless
  • reaper in 1972
    • a virus that fills up your disk space and stops you from removing it without a reboot
  • ANIMAL is a trojan in 1975
    • copies itself to things
  • the original westworld uses the concept of a virus in its plot in 1973
  • Brain boot sector virus
    • first ransom ware from copy protection code in 1986
  • The morris worm 1988
    • within 24 hours 1/10th of the connected machines where infected (~6000)
      • this prompted the start of the cyber security industry and modern conciousness of malware and viruses
